(Danang, 22 October 2015) Seventeen potential leaders of higher education institutions across Vietnam will join a training course on Higher Education Leadership and University Management taking place in Danang from 19 to 30 October 2015.

The Higher Education Leadership and University Management (HELUM) training course is a distinct programme initiated by the British Council in Vietnam with strong support from Tate & Lyle. It is aimed at developing capacity for higher education (HE) leaders, at vice dean or dean level or above, from Vietnamese higher education institutions. The course will prepare them for increasingly challenging leadership roles.

In its third year, the leadership training course will include the participation of 17 applicants, of whom six have been awarded the Tate & Lyle – British Council full fellowship and 11 were offered partial fellowships. Ten applicants will receive full or partial financial support to complete one module in the UK at Aston University between 30 November and 4 December 2015.

The course, which focusses on influential presenting, senior leadership training and shadowing in the UK, is delivered by Rebecca Hales, British Council trainer, Terry Hodgett, Director of the Centre for Executive Education, and Prof. Helen Griffiths, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Aston University.

The development of the HELUM programme demonstrates the British Council’s commitment to supporting the national Higher Education Reform Agenda (HERA) and the internationalisation of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Vietnam. Participants are expected to be equipped with essential skills to build sustained performance, understand, implement and contribute to their university’s strategy. They will also be trained to understand their roles as leaders – developing and contributing to university culture.

About the British Council

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.

We work in more than 100 countries and our 8,000 staff – including 2,000 teachers – work with thousands of professionals and policy makers and millions of young people every year by teaching English, sharing the arts and delivering education and society programmes.

We are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter. A core publicly-funded grant provides 20 per cent of our turnover which last year was £864 million. The rest of our revenues are earned from services which customers around the world pay for, such as English classes and taking UK examinations, and also through education and development contracts and from partnerships with public and private organisations. All our work is in pursuit of our charitable purpose and supports prosperity and security for the UK and globally.
