HANOI –The British Council wraps up another successful Your World video competition this year with five schools, including public and private Cambridge schools in Viet Nam, participating in the competition. With a video focus on climate change and solutions to cope with the issue, Thanh Xuan Secondary School has been announced the National Winner in this year’s competition, and ranks second overall, having competed with other British Council Partner Schools across the East Asia region.

The Your World video-making competition is a flagship activity for British Council Partner Schools across our global network. Now in its eighth year, and with Viet Nam announced the global winner of the competition in 2022-2023, the theme for Your World 2023-24 was 'Climate Change: From crisis to action', linking directly to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 13. Students drew upon their knowledge of subjects studied at school, such as science, business studies, and global studies, to produce exceptional video entries. These videos demonstrated students’ ability to work collaboratively to solve real life problems in their own communities, putting both their skills and learning to practical and positive use. This year, submissions numbered more than 600 video entries, with over 3,000 students taking part from our Partner Schools across the global network. The national winning team from Thanh Xuan school shared their thoughts on taking part in this year’s Your World competition, saying, ‘The experiences throughout the process, from writing the script to recording, from editing to completing the product submitted to the contest, have provided us with new insights and many unforgettable memories. Our group has gained valuable experiences and learned numerous lessons, contributing to our continuous improvement and further development. We would like to thank the British Council for providing us with a new and beneficial platform to participate and achieve valuable accomplishments. We hope that in the future, the Your World contest will continue to be held, providing young people with opportunities to shine, gain valuable experiences and lessons, and increasingly affirm their own worth.’

‘Having been a judge in various stages of this competition over the past few years, I know how much hard work and effort the students put into creating their entries – it is truly admirable and inspiring. All the videos were well structured, produced professionally, and included practical solutions to encourage the audience to take climate action, such as adopting sustainable fashion. Viet Nam’s winning video from Thanh Xuan Secondary School used simple animation which told the story well. The video’s creativity, organisation and presentation were logical and could easily be used globally, not just here in Viet Nam’, shared Davide Guarini Gilmartin, Senior Academic Manager, English Programmes, British Council in Viet Nam, at the award ceremony.

By participating in this competition, students develop core skills which enable them to grow into well-rounded, creative and critical citizens, ready to engage with job markets and shape the future for themselves and future generations. Through Your World, the British Council hopes to inspire students to be drivers of positive change. 'British Council Partner Schools provide students with a world-class/an exceptional education, and through British Council's work with universities globally, students gain access to valuable information to enhance their university application process. Through various activities like extracurriculars, collaborative projects, and global competitions such as the Your World video competition, students engage with peers worldwide, fostering their growth into conscientious global citizens', said Donna McGowan, Director Viet Nam, British Council.

Talking about the positive impact of taking part in the competition, Thanh Huyen Nguyen, Principal of Thanh Xuan Secondary School, shared, ‘Participating in the Your World competition, our students can express themselves, unleash their creativity in cinema, and confidently demonstrate their foreign language skills. At the same time, they commit to proactively developing themselves outside of class time, raising awareness about social and environmental issues around us. After the Your World contest, I hope they will continue to shine, inspire, and motivate generations of Vietnamese students to be creative, think critically, and develop comprehensively, thus preparing them to enter the international labour market and become global citizens.’

Globally, the British Council works with more than 2,500 Partner Schools, supporting over 100,000 teachers, and touching the lives of millions of students across South Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, and the Americas. The British Council supports Partner Schools by providing a secure, compliant and consistent exams delivery service, dedicated administrative support, and professional development and training opportunities for teachers and school leaders. Thanh Xuan secondary school also delivers UK International School exams in partnership with the British Council.
