About this programme

The British Council is committed to playing an active role in raising awareness of climate change. In Vietnam we run climate change educational activities and work with secondary school teachers and students. This programme is aligned with Vietnam’s national target programme to respond to climate change and Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training’s climate change objectives.

In 2012, this project was implemented in 25 secondary schools in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City as part of the Connecting Classrooms network. By the end of 2012 the project was implemented in 300 primary schools in Hoa Binh province in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Training.

The project will continue in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Training to expand the programme to  three more provinces in 2013-2014. The programme and content will then be further shared as part of the school curriculum across Vietnam.

Our aims

Through the climate change education project, in partnership with Ministry of Education and Training, the British Embassy, Live & Learn and other local NGOs, we aim to:

  • enhance knowledge and influence behaviours of secondary school students on climate change issues through accessible education materials and the implementation of student- generated climate change initiatives
  • showcase the UK as the leading country in the climate change field through real case studies and examples
  • promote understanding and awareness of UK achievements as well as opportunities for linking between schools in Vietnam and the UK.

What is climate change?

Climate change is a long-term change in weather conditions identified by changes in temperature, precipitation, winds, and other indicators.

Climate change is having an impact upon everyone and all sectors of society. By strengthening networks and relationships among people, the British Council is increasing understanding of the case for tackling climate change and championing implementation of international agreements addressing climate change threats.
