The Your English – My English exhibition was held at the Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies (HUFLIS) campus on the 12 and 13 of September 2023. The exhibition showcased Phase 1 achievements of the Hue English project, funded by the British Council as part of the UK/Vietnam Season 2023.
Hue English is a collaborative project between sociolinguists and second language education researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies (HUFLIS). It aims to explore Vietnamese English spoken by residents in Hue, Vietnam, as well as speakers’ connections to how they speak English.
The opening ceremony on 12 September was honoured by the presence of representatives from the British Council, Thua Thien Hue Institute for Research and Development, Hue Monuments Conservation Centre, representatives from the University Administrator as well as various departments and faculties of the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Hue University. The event also attracted school teachers and nearly 200 students from the university.
Other exciting activities included performances of traditional folk music from Manchester and Hue, displays and hands-on experience of traditional and contemporary artistic creations by Hue artisans, such as calligraphy, paper flower crafting, and tò he (a traditional Vietnamese toy made from coloured rice dough), and the launch of Phase 2 of the project, the Our English competition for local school students.
During the opening ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh, the project representative, also launched the 'Our English' English speaking competition for middle and high school students in the Thua Thien Hue province. The competition, with its attractive prizes, is expected to receive enthusiastic participation from students in the upcoming period.
The multimedia exhibition featured a combination of visual, auditory, and interactive materials, showcasing examples of English spoken by people from Hue alongside samples of English spoken by people in Manchester. The project aims to offer diverse language perspectives, boost confidence in English communication, and celebrate cultural uniqueness.
