Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung was awarded the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM 2023–24. She is currently studying for an MSc Data Science at Middlesex University.
Why did you choose to pursue your studies in a STEM subject in the UK?
Pursuing a postgraduate degree in Data Science is a natural step for me as it aligns perfectly with my strong passion for the field and my ambition to become an expert in data science. The UK's renowned education system and its diverse international environment make it an ideal destination for me to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in this rapidly evolving field.
Please share with us about your study programme in the UK, what do you like most about this programme, or scholarship scheme, or your UK institution?
I am incredibly grateful and honoured to be awarded the Women in STEM scholarship, which has enabled me to pursue my MSc in Data Science at Middlesex University London.
One of the aspects I appreciate most about this scholarship programme is the financial support it provides, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies without the burden of worrying about living expenses or tuition fees.
Moreover, being part of the Women in STEM scholars' community has opened up various opportunities for me, such as participation in the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium. These extra activities not only enhance my study experience but also broaden my network and provide valuable hands-on experience in the field.
The MSc Data Science programme at Middlesex University London is meticulously designed to cater to the demands of the industry, striking a perfect balance between theoretical concepts and practical applications. The emphasis on lab activities and challenges allows me continuously to improve my skills and showcase my capabilities in real-world scenarios.
Additionally, Middlesex University London boasts excellent facilities, including well-equipped self-study spaces with computers, monitors, and free printers for student use. The extensive library resources further enhance the learning experience by providing access to a wealth of study materials and reference books.
What are your plans after finishing your studies in the UK?
After completing my studies in the UK, my plan is to return to Viet Nam and continue pursuing my career in Data Science. I aim to leverage the knowledge and skills I've acquired during my time abroad to contribute to the growth and development of the industry in Viet Nam.
Additionally, I am passionate about supporting and empowering women in STEM fields. I intend to actively engage with my university and the laboratory where I conducted my bachelor's studies in Viet Nam. By advocating for and providing support to women pursuing careers in STEM disciplines, I hope to inspire and mentor future generations of female professionals. Sharing my experiences and insights will be instrumental in fostering a more inclusive and diverse STEM community in the country.
What advice would you give to Vietnamese students who wish to apply for the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM 2024–25?
For Vietnamese students aspiring to apply for the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM 2024, I would offer the following advice:
- Research and identify universities that align with your academic and career goals, and submit applications to as many relevant institutions as possible.
- Begin preparing your application materials well in advance of the deadline. This includes gathering required documents, such as academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and personal statements.
- Use your personal statement to communicate your passion for STEM and your commitment to advancing in the field effectively.
