In 2015, British Council and Nam Dinh signed an MOU on the cooperation on English development for the province and English teacher training is the focus of the MOU.
In 2015 - the pilot year, British Council set to train the first group of 60 English teachers; of which 20 are primary teachers, 20 lower secondary teachers and 20 are upper secondary teachers. Before the training take place, British Council did the needs analysis by visiting schools, interviewing teachers and designed the training which is the combination of language proficiency and methodology.
The training content was designed by combining British Council global teaching methodology course materials – English for Teaching level 2 and level 3, Certificate in Primary English Language Teaching (CIPELT) and Certificate in Secondary English Language Teaching (CISELT). The timetabling of the training was also designed so that the teachers can immediately applied what they learnt in their class by attending 2 classes per week while continue their teaching at their school within 10 weeks. The 60 teacher are currently doing 02 online courses “Learning ICT” and “Communicative Assessment” after their face to face training completed in December 2015.
British Council trainers observed the classrooms and interviewed the teachers before and after the training as part of the program design. Feedback from the participants in the pilot course indicated that the British Council training differed significantly from previous training in that the British Council training was more practical and relevant to their teaching contexts. From one primary teachers: ‘My students are eager to learn new things.’ And from a lower secondary teacher: “‘My students can learn English in a fun atmosphere”.
