Academic English has become increasingly recognised in recent years as more parents and students understand the importance of academic English in both education and future international work environments.

The British Council's Academic English course, offered by the world’s leading English teaching organisation with 90 years of global experience and over 30 years in Vietnam, is designed to build a strong foundation to help high school students succeed in international exams (IELTS, A-Level, IGCSE), study abroad, or pursue university programmes in Vietnam.

  • Age group: For high school students from Grade 10 to 12
  • Course terms: August, January, and June. Classes take place twice a week over 16 weeks (a separate schedule applies for the summer term)
  • Locations: Teaching centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Course content and learning objectives

Success in the IELTS Exam
50% of the course content is dedicated to helping students deepen their knowledge of IELTS requirements and master test-taking techniques to maximise their scores. Students will:

  • Understand the IELTS scoring criteria and be equipped with the necessary skills and social knowledge to apply in the exam
  • Master strategies and techniques for IELTS reading and listening to optimise their scores
  • Learn the language and topics that frequently appear in the IELTS test
  • Know the “Dos and Don’ts” when taking the exam
  • Identify areas for improvement based on personalised feedback from experienced IELTS teachers

Success in University Environments
Success in learning goes beyond the IELTS exam. The remaining 50% of the course focuses on improving students’ language abilities and equipping them with the essential skills for international university study in the UK, Australia, the US, other countries, or within Vietnam. Students will:

  • Develop themselves by experiencing collaborative learning environments similar to those in university and improve independent research skills using software and AI tools
  • Enhance accuracy, fluency, and confidence in using academic English through lessons modelled on higher education requirements, which also support the language needs of the IELTS test
  • Build skills and strategies for processing academic texts, both in reading and listening
  • Gain confidence in presenting, thinking critically, and participating in classroom discussions and debates
  • Develop intercultural knowledge and awareness to support holistic growth and reduce the risk of culture shock in international learning environments
